Celentano Men Have Named You

The Celentano is by far my favorite pizza from Osteria La Buca in Hollywood on Melrose. I've also had two great celeb citings there, Don Johnson and Danny Devito (so you know it's good). This amazing creation features pancetta (Italian bacon), blue cheese, mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano and yes, a sunny side up egg in the middle. There is no sauce on the pizza, so the egg yolk, once broken, serves that purpose.

Previously "La Buca" was run by my friend Fillipo and his "Mama", who made all the pasta from scratch. Now, Fillipo and Mama have since left and opened a restaurant down the street from La Buca called Osteria Mama. The new "Mama" seems to be quite popular, but I'm waiting until their liquor license goes through to try the place.

Sublime with Rome at the Palladium on 4/20 was sublime. For those of you that don't know Sublime with Rome is the two original members (bassist and drummer) with Rome Ramirez as the lead singer. Legally they have to be called "Sublime with Rome". The show was smokin' ;) and Rome sounded very much like Bradley Knowles (R.I.P). Rock n' Lobster

For the record, I love a chowder, a chutney, a fritter, a custard and yes, a pot pie. So when we were at one of my favorite local eateries, The Larchmont Grill, recently, I had to try their's. When I saw that I could have it with lobster, I clawed at the opportunity. The waiter served it at the table "Larchmont Grill Style", which is flipped over, inside out with the flaky pie crust on the bottom. It was so good that I said to Leisure Girl, "Pinch me! I must be dreaming."

Bowling Brunch went down this morning at Pinz in Studio City, CA. The 2 game session was followed by some nosh at Jerry's Deli next door. Leisure Girl, my long time friend PB and his girlfriend were there to join in the fun and food. Nice rolling, PB. Nice rolling, everyone.

The Square

I was lucky enough to attend the US premier of The Square, directed by an Australian colleague of mine, Nash Edgerton and written by his brother Joel. The movie has been out a while, touring the festivals (SXSW, etc), but now it's been released in the states. The film is a dark comedy thriller shot in the land of OZ, featuring an All-stralian cast, including the writer. It's definitely worth checking out on DVD if this indie does not make it to your local theater. NEWS FLASH: LA friends it looks like there will be a limited screening at the Landmark NuArt Theatre, this Friday April 9th.

Glow Balls

Had a great leisurely weekend that kicked off with a 10 hole 4 person scramble-style Glowball tournament at Scholl Canyon in Glendale. They give each team 1 glowball per player (really it's a ball that flashes red when you hit it). Our team "Tron Shack", named for the glow of "Tron" and the comedy of "Caddy Shack", turned in a score of Even and tied for 5th place, just barely missing the cut for a prize for 4th place or better. The full moon and the Los Angeles skyline made a dramatic backdrop for a fun filled night. See you at the next one.

Flanigans

Recently, while visiting Florida, we stopped by Flanigans in Deerfield Beach. There are several former Big Daddy's Lounge turned restaurant locations throughout the Greater South Florida Area. We enjoyed the smoked fish dip to start and then I had the perfectly seasoned and lightly breaded dolphin fingers (mahi mahi, not Flipper's digits). Man, I miss that place.

We had a great time down in Puerto Vallarta last President's Day Weekend. We stayed in a 12 room villa, Quinta Del Mar, which was also the location of our friend's wedding. When we weren't whooping it up at the festivities or cruising around downtown, I spent a great amount of time sitting in a chair in our room, enjoying the view, sipping beers, watching the boats through binoculars, and feeling very relaxed.

Cuckoo for Coconut Chips

If you've every been to Haiku's Twin Falls Fruit Stand on the Hawaiian Isle of Maui, you may have noticed and / or enjoyed Coconut Chips. If you have not been there, odds are you have not enjoyed them, because it's the only place in the world to get them. I sent my girlfriend, Leisure Girl, on a wild goose chase all around the island looking for this delicious snack. "We scoured the island from ABC Stores to local farmers markets in pursuit of the chips. We became obsessed with finding these crack-like wonders and they didn't disappoint. I ended up getting the private number of the maker and owner the company Bananas and Coconuts from the concierge at the hotel," says LG.

LG tells me that they only sell these treats, consisting solely of toasted, then roasted shaved coconut and Hawaiian salt, at Twin Falls Fruit Stand on the road to Hana. Luckily, she brought back a few bags of the savory delights that taste oddly similar to bacon.

Tonight we enjoyed part of the last remaining bag in our possession, chopped up and sprinkled over vanilla frozen yogurt. Mahalo, Leisure Girl!

In my neighborhood of Hollywood, CA, two new great burger joints have recently opened; Umami Hollywood, the 3rd installment of the famous Umami chain and Stout, a hip spot serving a great selection of micro brews and burgers. While Umami consistantly serves some of the best hamburgers, turkey burgers, portabello mushroom burgers and pork laden sandwiches known to man, it has no TVs and only 2 beers on tap. Stout's "Stout Burger", while good, Senator, is no Umami, but Stout does have 2 large TV's, friendly staff, and serves food until 4am. Stout does have great ground chicken and veggie burgers too.

I took my first bowling lesson today with Nancy Kato and Rich Honda at Pinz in Studio City. It was awesome. I learned so much about oil patterns and the markers on the lanes. We got to walk the lanes and I looked into the end where the pins are set up. Did you realize each pin is 12 inches apart? I did not. The next step is to buy my own equipment; ball, shoes and a bag or "hook in a box" as Nancy calls it, because the spin comes from the ball (and spin is tough to do with the solid plastic house balls one borrows from the lanes).

I finally got to go to Umami Burger #2 for lunch today. Word on the street was that their hamburger rivaled the Father's Office Burger. My verdict: good, but not better (sorry CA). It is definitely worth trying. I had the Umami Burger 6x. Some of the 6x ingredients include crispy parmesan, roasted tomatoes, and Umami's Homemade Ketchup (Oh no ketchup! Take that F.O.). The hand cut fries were also very tasty.

On Thursday night, we went to see Franz Ferdinand play live at The Palladium in Hollywood. They rocked that place. They didn't say much either. Here's what I know about the Franzia. They're from Scotland. That's it. Oh, and that they're very talented and play catchy dance-like rock n' roll. Check out this clip. The picture is shakey, but the audio's pretty good, Franz Ferdinand had great light and visual show too that night.

As the free poster we received on the way out (not shown) said, we did enjoy "an evening with Cake", who performed live at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theater on Hollywood Blvd this past Wednesday. I was pleased to hear all of my favorite classic Cake songs, like, "Stick Shifts and Safety Belts", "Daria" and "Italian Leather Sofa". As the poster (shown) indicates, the show was rife with political commentary, the highlight being a push up competition where first prize was a small tree, because apparently Cake loves fitness and the environment (small tree not shown).

For those of you that don't know, I'm a big fan of singer / songwriter Stew. In the past he's had success in the independent music world and in the NY, SF and LA music scenes. He's fronted a band, who's abbreviation we'll call TNP (look it up). His songs tell comic and poignant stories about junkies and other NY/LA art world types, just trying to make it and/or fake it.

In 2007, Stew had a musical produced off Broadway, where he performs on stage with other cast and band members. He went on that year to win the Tony Award for best book for a musical. Recently, I picked up this soundtrack and I've been loving it. It tells the story of Stew's life growing up in South Los Angeles, then moving to Amsterdam, which to quote one of the numbers "...makes Berkeley (CA) look like the bible belt!" After, Amsterdam, Stew moves on to Berlin "...a black hole with taxis", during that city's political and artistic tumultuous period. I'm really stoked, because Spike Lee filmed a performance of the musical, that debuted at The Sundance Film Festival and soon will be aired on PBS, probably becoming a DVD, so I at last will get to see it. This show has been touted as "the musical for guys that hate musicals." You gotta love a musical CD with a parental advisory sticker for explicit content on the cover. Check it.

I just had a foodgasmic experience at 8 oz the Burger Bar on Melrose Ave. The Short Rib Grilled Cheese (pictured) was the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. My words can not do the place justice. You just have to go there or look at the menu. It tells of a story. Recently, I was discussing "go to" places for inexpensive good grub and how the burger thing is out of control in LA. There are literally dozens of choices in the City of Angles for gourmet burgs. But now when that subject comes up, I'll tell people 8 oz on Melrose is THE place to go for great eats in a laid back full service atmosphere. Disclaimer: I've yet to have their burgers, but I will soon, oh yes, soon my friends.
My colleuges and I were also saying that beer bars are the new wine bars (though 8oz has a great selection of both) and burgers and comfort foods are the new haute cuisine (some will say they never left). Known for their fancy beef patties and gourmet fixins, food dood Godwin Armstrong's spot is every thing you want in a joint and more, friendly servers, great loaction, provacative dishes. Some other menu items of note are the 3 sliders with beer pairings. One slider is made with Wild Boar. The biggest problem bar tender Brandon told me was that folks can't get a large size version of their favorite slider. But "off the menu" they will serve you a trio of your favorite. Also, get the Okinawan Sweet Potato chips. They're purple, crisp and perfectly salty. Florida peeps they have a location in Miami!

We spent a fantastic week on the island of Maui. There is so much to do on this island for the sports and leisure enthusiast, from surfing and diving to golf and just relaxing on the beach. We had some great meals too! The fish tastes like it was just pulled from the ocean and it probably was.This is a shot from my camera phone on the Emerald Course at Wailea. The course is short and the greens are medium speed, but in great shape and beautifully landscaped. The biggest hazard is being distracted by the views of other Hawaiian Islands in the distance.
This is another shot from my camera phone at Grandmas, a mellow surf break on the west side of Maui, right off the road to Lahaina. It was breaking about 2-3 feet that day, the perfect mellow day for some long rights and lefts. Mellow was the the theme of this trip, nice and easy. There weren't many people out in the line up. Just a couple of sea turtles or "hanu" in Hawaiian. We saw many hanus in the water this trip. Mahalo nui loa for reading!

Ever find yourself asking the the question "Who's that guy sitting next to Jack at all the LA Laker home games"? No, it's not Donald Sutherland. It's legendary music and movie mogul Lou Adler. He directed Cheech and Chongs Up in Smoke and was the manager for many other great acts in the 60's and 70's, like The Mamas and the Papas. He's the father of musician Cisco Adler and the uncle of GNR's drummer, Steven Adler. He's also friends with Nicholson and a Laker Fan. I wonder if he was the inspiration for the character named Lou Ashby in the Showtime series Californication?

PS the girl on the right is Jack Nicholson's daughter, Jackie...jk I don't know her name, but it is his offspring.

Chicago - The Grand Finale

The last installment of our Chicago trip ends at David Burke's Primehouse, located in the James Hotel. Known for its dry aged beef, the restaurant serves up many different cuts and ages. The meal was fantastic. The service was above par, friendly and informative.We started with a delicious Caesar salad, made and tossed the old fashioned way, right there at our table.
I had the 40 day aged bone in Rib Eye. It was very good, but I'm starting to feel that the aging process might make the meat too old tasting for my liking. Go figure. I also had the blue cheese mouse and truffle fries to accompany my steak. I tried a few different red wines by the glass (Zin, Pinot, Cab). Someone also ordered a Tempranillo (Spanish red) from the extensive wine list, which was also quite good.

Afterwards, we were treated to a tour of the dry age room where the meat ages at 42 degrees along side a wall of Himalayan Pink Salt for superb taste and quality.Each cut is tagged with the date to see how long it's been aging.

Not only known for its friendly people and party-like atmostphere, Chi-town is also famous for its great food.

Deep dish spins all night long in the City of Chi. We called ahead one and one half hours for these puppies. That's how long it takes to cook them. The food at Pizzeria Due, which was right down the street from our hotel (Da James) and a block away from its originator Pizzeria Uno, was freaking awesome!

It's like a meal in every slice.

Never hating a player (check out is at 2:00pm), The James Hotel was an excellent place to stay for a Leisurely weekend in Chicago, modern, slick, fun, but not stuffy. There's a great bar in the lobby and attached to the James is The J bar, a rocking loungey type club. Stay tuned for the blog entry of David Burke's Primehouse, also located inside King James.

All this stuff comes with the room. Small bottles of booze were pricey, but nice to have the option.

Nice flat screen, nice view. In the corner was a "nook". Sadly, it wasn't used, but looked cool.

Chicago! Man, what a city. I had the pleasure of spending a long weekend there recently. What don't I love about that toddlin' town? First of all, it was very clean for a major metropolis and the weather when we were there was perfect. It was the hottest day of the year there on that Friday. On that great Friday afternoon, we attended my very first Chicago Cubs game .Wrigleyville is so rad. There are tons of bars and restaurants surrounding Wrigley Field, like Murphy's (We didn't got to Murphy's. It was too crowded.), but it's a constant party before, after and during the game. I, along with 40,000+ others enjoyed a day at the ballpark and the after party in Wrigleyville. There are even bleachers on the roofs of the buildings surrounding the ballpark.
PS - Cubs won! (Against their rivals the St. Louis Cardinals.)

This past Easter Sunday was some of the best weather I have ever seen. The sky was the brightest blue. The breeze was ever slight. The temp was perf. It was an amazing day for an Easter egg hunt, a round of golf, brunching with the family or worshiping the joys of life. Speaking of golf, congrats to Angel Cabrera, the oldest man to win the Masters on this same glorious Sunday. I watched as golfers approached the 18th green at Pelican Hill. I can't imagine what it's like to try to make a shot with the multitudes of folks in the gallery at Augusta cheering, leering, sneering. Felicidades Angel!

Stopped by the Original Tinder Box in Santa Monica on Wilshire this past weekend. They have an amazing selection of cigars in their humidor. It's a great tobacco and gift store for the gentleman that (still) smokes. I think this is part of a chain, but this is the original store. We took the car ferry over to Balboa Island in Newport Harbor this past weekend. It was pretty cool to be driving ion the water, well sort of. Then we stopped at one of Newport's best Happy Hours on the island and helped ourselves to a variety of $4 Happy Hour menu items including Oysters Rockefeller, Shrimp Cocktail, New England Clam Chowder, Sliders and Quesedillas. Afterwards, we washed it down with a chocolate covered banana, a home town favorite.And yes, I'm happy to see you.

Met a friend at 1739 Public House in Los Feliz (check out this LA Times article). Besides having great beers on tap and Happy Hour Mon-Wed w/ $3 PBR drafts, they also offer a small free cheese pizza with the purchase of a beer weekdays before 7pm. This casual pub-style bar makes you order from the bartender, a la Father's Office style. Other dishes range from $3, $6, and $9. They also have wine and a full bar. So go there with your crew and chill at a booth for as long as you like.

Good Ole Cole's is Back!

Cole's the home of the french dip sandwich on 6th and Grand in downtown LA is reopened. This old time joint that has probably been around since the 20's serves preprohibition era style cocktails, like Old Fashioned's and Rickey's (vodka, rum or gin, lime juice, simple syrup and club soda). (That's the drink I had.) For the ultimate experience, try hot chicken, lamb, pork, or roast beef sandwiches with your choice of cheese that you dip in au jus sauce. (I enjoyed the pork.) I was told it was the juiciest. As a side, I had Cole's Slaw. Note: they're not the inventors of Cole slaw. All was tasty. The service was great and in a cool nostalgic setting.
Truth be told, there's a small speakeasy-style secret small bar located in the back called The Varnish Bar, where the mixologists create classic cocktails as well. Check out the Thrillist blog.
FYI, there's some controversy on who invented the French dip, Phillipe's another LA landmark or Cole's. And don't get me started on what a dichotomy downtown LA is either. There's literally dozens of people "urban camping" ie; homeless, sleeping in tent-like structures a block from Cole's, which is actually on a nice block.

I love the holidays and in case you didn't know today is National Pancake Day, as declared by The International House of Pancakes. Why it isn't International Pancake Day I do not know. Couldn't I.H.O.P. pull some strings at Pancake NATO? Anyway, you're supposed to enjoy a free stack of pancakes at IHOP and donate to The Children's Miracle Network. So in case you read this and it is too late to participate in National Pancake Day, I say we still enjoy some flap jacks, waffles, crepes, what have you and still donate to the The Children's Miracle Network until the end of February. Hello and welcome to The Parker Palm Springs. Please take your mind altering drugs now. Ok, now please have a lemonade while you wait to check in and for your hallucinogenics to kick in. Designed by Jonathan Adler, the Parker has lots of cool modern-grandma-70s-acid trip decor to check out. This post is mainly about the Leisure activities one can enjoy there. Also, not featured here is our visit to the Spa oddly named The Palm Springs Yacht Club, a very nice facility.
This is the sign for the fine French cuisine restaurant on the property called, Mr. Parker's. It's a magical mystery tour, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

After we checked into our spacious and cool room, we hit the Lemonade stand. I got a Hefewizen and Lemonade concoction, very tasty, like a beer lemonade. LG had the muddled and spiked Lemonade. They love their Lemonade here.
Next to the Lemonade Stand is a French Bocce Ball court. The French version is called Petanque. We had lunch next to the court. I had a $15 Kobe Beef Hot Dog. What's the French word for "sucker"?

Choose your own Leisure: Giant Chess or out door Ping Pong in the sand.

Of course, one could just lounge by the pool with a good book. The Parker has two.

Also, on property is a Croquet Court. I skate board surf-style. I croquet golf-style. Deal with it, Europe!

Leisure, thy name is Parker.

All this leisure business is making me exhausted!

We finished off the evening at Mr. Parker's, a fun place with good food in the French tradition, but without the attitude. Although expensive, the resort is still within reach and less than 2 hours driving distance from Los Angeles. Take your lady. She'll love you for it.

Okay, well, it wasn't the Opera, but I was lucky enough to be invited to see the Chinese National Acrobat Troop perform at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The show was amazing. The things these folks can do will blow your mind.The craziest thing happened before the show. I got a drink from the Patina Group owned bar and the nice bar tender asked me if I wanted to pre-order a beverage to enjoy during intermission and I said [hell] yes! So in between acts, in the lobby, there it was waiting for me at a table with a name tag in front of it. An incredibly honest lot, these OC patrons of the arts are. Cheers!

Saint Diego

In the late 1700s, when the Missionaries were tired of doing it in that one position and looking for a sweet town near the Mexican Border with great surf and killer fish tacos, they settled upon San Diego. The city is named after a man who dug the weather and maintained a laid back attitude, Manuel Diego, who became Saint Diego after a crazy weekend in Las Vegas with Pope Duderonomy the III, but we won't get into that here. I highly recommend California's Southern most major city to all my friends and family to visit or live permanently. For the kids there's an awesome zoo and Sea World. For the adults there's Pacific Shores, a fine bar in Ocean Beach with $2.50 cocktails. Thanks to A-dub and RJ for hosting another stellar weekend and Happy B-day RJ!

Voted by The Today Show a few years ago as "The Best Burger in America" local LA favorite restaurant Father's Office has two convenient west side locations (Culver City and Santa Monica). Topped with caramelized onions, blue cheese, Gruyere cheese and served on an oblong roll, the burger is quite tasty. I'm going to go on the record and say it is the best ever (sorry Village Idiot, really sorry 25 Degrees, sorry In and Out). Plus they serve like 20+ beers on tap and boast a great wine list too. Get a basket of sweet potato fries or shoe string potatoes that come with garlic aioli for dipping. DO NOT ask for ketchup! It is not allowed in the restaurant and anyone caught smuggling in the contra ban will be removed from the premises. So I ask you to try this meaty masterpiece for yourself and let LM know what you think.

Say it ain't so, another Ra-Fed match up in the Australian Open and the American football finals game known stateside as Super Bowl XLIII on one glorious day?!?! Both matches were very close. Just in case you didn't see the Australian Open at 3:30am or Tivo(TM) it, Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the 5th set (in 4hrs and 24 minutes time) to win his 6th major tournament. There was a very touching exchange at the trophy presentation ceremony between Rog and Rafa, aw.Later on this sport filled Super Bowl Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers scored a touchdown in the final minute to beat the AZ Cardinals 27-23, but alas, they didn't cover the spread of -7. Well, if you didn't bet on the Steelers to win, it was at least an interesting game. Maybe at the end of it all Kurt Warner cried and hugged Ben Roethlisburger.

Oh, and some guy name Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played for 12 minutes at half time. I'm not sure what Sylvio from The Sapronos was doing there, but I bet that "The Boss" did "Born to Run" and "Glory Days", but for some reason that proposition bet was thrown out of our pool. What's up with that MTH?
So ends another football season and a begins another golf and tennis season, a time of being less glued to ESPN, unless you're into basketball...hmm basketball...?

Perhaps I've been spending too much time at the 19th hole, but recently I learned about the 16th hole at the FBR Golf Tournament aka "the loudest hole in golf" at the TPC in Scottsdale AZ this weekend. The tourney is being covered on The Golf Channel. For those who don't know, it's basically a stadium surrounding the 166 yrd par 3 16th hole where fans cheer and yell and chant as if they were at a Football Game, a very rowdy football game. PGA pros get booed by fans if the don't make the green too.

Are they trying to change up the sport a bit from the stuffy elitist image it sometimes has? Making it a bit more Happy Gilmore if you will? I like the idea of untucking and loosening up the collared shirt a bit, but I feel we should still keep the focus on golf.

Recently, while gazing upon all of the booty stowed inside the trunk of my car, I realized that I regularly travel with a literal cornucopia of leisure. I'm rolling with bongos, a tambourine, a tennis bag, a golf bag, some random bottle of water and an earthquake kit. (I was a Boy Scout if you can't tell already.) But seriously, what can't you do out of this boot? Drum circle or band jam? Yes. 36 holes at Pebble? Heck, yeah! Mixed doubles anyone? Wait, where are my bocce balls?

Casting Call: Food Network is looking for men and women with big personalities to grill alongside Bobby Flay in Season 2 of GRILL IT! If you love to experiment with burgers, seafood, ribs, fish, pork or poultry, and have skills to prove it, we want to hear from you! The show is non-competitive and features grillers from across the country creating unique recipes on the grill!

Recently, whilst playing golf at Rancho Park Golf Course in West LA, an unidentified squirrel chewed through my mesh pocket of my golf bag and proceeded to eat a frozen Snickers bar that I had in there. Please beware: These are not your father's squirrels. The squirrels these days are more aggressive and braver than any other rodent I have encountered during my tenure as an avid golfer. Where's Carl (Bill Murray's character) from Caddy Shack when you need him?

Thank you to American Golf and the SCGA for bringing this to my attention. Golf is expensive already. Golf is not tobacco. Golf is not alcohol. Specifically on the public course level, it is a sport not a luxury. It is no longer the elitist game it once was. Is the state trying to make it that again? Or do they not understand what golf is, by thinking its a game for only the rich with plenty of time on their hands and extra income to spend. Taxation of golf would be unfair, unconstitutional, and is unacceptable.

EP Stands for Echo Park and El Prado

Thanks to Ed for the recommendation of El Prado for some fine micro brews, snacks and records (as they boast on their website). You'll find this relatively new beer only bar in the heart of Historic Echo Park, Los Angeles, California on the safer, cleaner than ever Sunset Boulevard. A hip joint that seems more at home in SoHo than East LA. The menu is written on the mirrored wall. Beer: I tried the Coronado Orange Ave Ale (Was it orange tasting or was that the cough drop I had before? Who cares! It was good.) Snacks: walnuts, still in the shell (You gotta really want to eat them, hipsters.), goat cheese and whatnot. Vinyl: Elvis, makes me wonder what "Jail House Rock" is really all about. All in all, cool spot!

Oh Burger Where Art Thou?

Grubbed on a tasty turkey burger from O! Burger in West Hollywood today (formerly the location of Tops). O! Burger boasts healthy burgers, fries, salads and shakes. They do veggie burgers too and vegan shakes as well. The burger, salad and iced tea combo, while pricey at $11 was very good. I stole some fries from a friend and they were pretaay good. Is there such thing as a healthy burger?

I just caught a cab home in Hollywood. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy to be safe and sound, but sometimes taxi rides can be weird. For example, the car I just got in was driven by a man I'm not sure had a permit to drive a hired vehicle (I saw none such license). On top of this, the seat belt light/bell kept going off every minute or so (which caused me to look for the hack license, maybe the two are related). Oh, and don't get me started when they don't have change! I mean you're a cab driver! You're pretty mucah a late night professional change maker! Anyone else have any weird cab stories?

A Restaurant - Redefining Newport Cool

Guys, you'll want to blaze-up for the occasion, because A is way cool and old school, so the dressier the better. Formerly The Arches, A Restaurant keeps it real with mahogany booths and A dark candle lit dining room. Talk about old school, there's even liquor lockers you can have your name put on to store your finest booze and A great bar scene where you might spot Mark McGrath and Mc G, investors in the joint.

Chef Tim Goodell and his wife Liza, creators of other great SoCal restaurants, such as Dakota, 25 Degrees and Red Pearl Kitchen know their cuts of meat, dishing out superb steaks and burgers with A-mazing sauces to compliment them. A Restaurant also boasts swingin' cocktails, like Harvey Wallbangers and Old Fashioned's. GO there for brunch and get the Short Rib Hash. You won't be disappointed.

The service is great too with some of the waiters working at that location for 20+ years. Ask for Salvatore. Tell him The Leisure Man sent you!

Football Finale

Well, my friends, now is that glorious moment in time we like to call the playoffs or the post season and/or the Bowl Championship Series, if you are more of a college football fan. My Miami Dolphins did much better this year than the previous year at least making it to the playoffs. FSU needs to step it up to get back to the ACC powerhouse it once was. But seriously, how can you couch potatoes sit around and watch 12 hours of Sports on TV??!? Answer: Easy! Ha!

Here's a question: Basketball? I'm more of a latter in the season basketball fan. California has like seven basketball teams, so there's always some one in the playoffs to root for. Maybe one could spend more time outdoors this winter/spring if possible or hit the gym to get in shape.

I'm going to enjoy these last few glorious weeks of the gridiron, but daggummit, going to miss you, man.

Joy's Life Diet

I caught the super skinny Joy Bauer on the Today Show this am and if you're like me you're trying to shed some pounds this new year (Happy New Year by the way). I'm not endorsing Joy's LIFE Diet (her new book), but it is a plan. You've got to have a plan, whether it's eating more fruits and veg, drinking less or working out more. I bet, if you stick with some sort of plan (Weight Watchers, etc), you will achieve your goals. So check it out and see what's best for you. Good luck in the '09.

Pelican Hill Golf Club South Course

Leisure woman and I had an unbelievable weekend at the luxurious The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast recently. On our stay, I got to play some golf at The Pelican Hill Golf Club on the resort property. One word: fore caddie (or is that two?) Dave, my fore caddie, was a great fore caddie and a nice man to boot. I had never played with a fore caddie until now. They spot your ball, fix divots, hold clubs and are great motivators with enthusiastic comments, like "great shot" or "shot of the day". We played the South Course. Most holes have a view of the Pacific. There are 2 back to back par 3's right on the ocean. All in all it was a challenging course in pristine condition with great facilities and staff, which comes with a hefty green fee. It can play 6500 yards from the back black tees, so it's lengthy and tight. Stay out of the rough too. It's a ball eater. Good thing Dave gave me a bunch of extra balls he found.
